Network Magazine Features XORP Project

March 5, 2004
ICSI's XORP (eXtensible Open Router Platform) project was featured in the March 2004 issue of Network Magazine in an article by Doug Allen. The article claims that XORP "may do for routing what Linux did for OSs." Like Linux, XORP is open source and free to download. Orion Hodson, a XORP researcher at ICSI, points out another strength of XORP, which is the relatively inexpensive cost of the hardware to run XORP — about $1,500 as compared to $22,000 for a commercial router made by Cisco. According to the article, XORP is not yet a threat to router vendors, but it could potentially have a significant effect in the future.
