Celebrating Excellence: ICSI Researcher Receives Top Honor for Open Science
Chelle Gentemann, PhD, has been named as a recipient of the 2025 Open Science Prize of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), a major honor recognizing work promoting the open sharing of knowledge and information for the benefit of all.
Dr. Gentemann has led a series of groundbreaking initiatives in support of NASA’s commitment to the sharing of scientific data, promoting transparency, and efficiency in scientific research. In 2023, she helped create NASA’s Year of Open Science and co-chaired an OSTP working group to create a Federal Year of Open Science. As lead scientist for NASA’s Transform to Open Science (TOPS) project in 2022, she co-authored the Open Science 101 course and taught it at workshops across the U.S. She also co-created one of NASA’s first cloud-optimized public datasets, testified before the House Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics, and co-authored the National Academies Best Practices for a Future Open Code Policy for NASA Space Studies.
Dr. Gentemann earned a BS in Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences from MIT, an MS in Physical Oceanography from the University of California San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and a PhD in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography from the University of Miami. She has previously received AGU’s Charles S. Falkenberg Award.
